"The Candlelight Carol"

music by John Rutter, and performed by The Cambridge Singers.

How do you capture the wind on the water?
How do you count all the stars in the sky?
How can you measure the love of a mother,
Or how can your write down a baby's first cry?

Candlelight, angel light, firelight and star glow
Shine on his cradle till breaking of dawn,
Gloria, gloria in excelsis Deo!
Angels are singing; the Christ Child is born.

Shepherds and wise men will kneel and adore him,
Seraphim round him their vigil will keep;
Nations proclaim him their Lord and their Savior,
But Mary will hold him and sing him to sleep.

Candlelight, angel light, firelight and star glow,
Shine on his cradle till breaking of dawn,
Gloria, gloria in excelsis Deo!
Angels are singing; the Christ Child is born.

Find Him at Bethlehem laid in a manger:
Christ our Redeemer asleep in the hay.
Godhead incarnate and hope for salvation:
A child with his mother that first Christmas Day.

Candlelight, angel light, firelight and star glow,
Shine on his cradle till breaking of dawn,
Gloria, gloria in excelsis Deo!
Angels are singing; the Christ Child is born!

Hi, MTM--

This one is special for me, too, as I heard it for the first time when I was expecting Child Number Two, and having difficulties... I was on bed-rest for a long, looong time, and this carol really spoke to me that winter. I just love how it portrays the Nativity as "human", in a "just-like-you-and-I" sort of way, and yet, the special MAGIC of the occasion shines through... I still can't hear this one without getting a bit tearful! And to have it sung by the Cambridge Singers, which is the group that Rutter himself put together to sing his music, and CONDUCTED by him... Perfection has undoubtedly been achieved with this selection.

Mrinz-- I'm so glad you're enjoying the music. I'm hot on the trail of the beautiful Maori carol you posted about yesterday, and as soon as I find it, I will let all of you know!!
