Then one day in about mid-October he feigned a fit of rage and hefted the rock (which WAS pretty boulder like) over his head and heaved it at our table!!!

Between the girlish shrieks, calling on our deity, and crying for our mommy's all five boys dove for cover as the styrofoam boulder bounced harmlessly across the table!!??!!

Mr Dearing laughed SO hard he cried !! We got there eventually ... Once our hearts restarted a normal rythmn!

He truly was a gem of a human being, a man and a teacher!

And of course he LOVED letting George out of his cage during class then shouting "don't panic the Iguana has escaped!!"

You've gotta respect dedication like THAT!!

Good memories of extra-ordinary people in a quirky setting!!Reverend Shawnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17592815717779408231noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8757611109196983331.post-65641680330570033932012-02-28T19:31:21.325-05:002012-02-28T19:31:21.325-05:00Ah, yes, our aptly named Geography teacher!! She ...Ah, yes, our aptly named Geography teacher!! She was, indeed, a diamond-in-the-rough. To this day, I can rhyme off all of the American states in which the main crop grown is soybeans... She was "old-school" (literally), but there simply weren't enough of us who appreciated the unique individual that she was!!

I remember her look of utter shock on the day I brought her lilacs from our garden, shortly after her divorce. It was hard to see past the "Roz" exterior sometimes, especially during the time when she must have been so worn down and depressed by her personal life.

There was another teacher-- a science teacher-- who was even more dear to me. He was another person who taught me "nothing is so strong as gentleness; nothing is so gentle as strength". My brother, sister and I all made the pilgrimage home to attend his funeral, after his sudden death. The room was filled to overflowing with colleagues, students and relatives-- all of us felt like his "family", and suffered such loss when he passed.

How lucky we have been to have had people like this share their wisdom with us.

(Nice to hear from you again, Rev!!)Candygirlflieshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04402373358975538931noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8757611109196983331.post-42336404635965304222012-02-28T16:27:04.508-05:002012-02-28T16:27:04.508-05:00Beautiful !!
I'm tempted to suggest that you...Beautiful !!

I'm tempted to suggest that you should also celebrate the teachers at a certain middle school in your home town ... there was a bizarre mix of folks there who fit almost every stereo-type of teacher you could imagine ... my fave was teacher who wore horn-rimmed glasses and a bee-hive (and who looked and SOUNDED like Roz from Monsters Inc).

In Grade 7 she condemned me for my terrible handwriting, and I remember telling her that one day we would ALL be carrying small computer devices we will do ALL our writing and studying on ... she shrieked at me "You're f----ng crazy to think that!!" I wish she was still around so I could take my ipad to her and say - "see??" ... our teachers impress us in many ways - go my friend, and touch the lives entrusted to your keeping with the warmth, care and compassion that is within you!!

In thirty years there will be a generation of young adults looking back and thinking of you as you think of Mrs Barton!!Reverend Shawnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17592815717779408231noreply@blogger.com
